Irradiation and Contamination - GCSE Physics

Irradiation happens when an object is exposed to a radioactive source that is outside of the object. Contamination is when the radioactive source is inside of the object.

Although both irradiation and contamination damage living cells, you can get rid of irradiation much easier by shielding the object or by removing the object entirely. However, when an object is contaminated, it is much more difficult to clean up all traces of radioactive material from the object.
