Here is how a few 5th-grade artists created these dry-point etching portraits! Before beginning, they read a short biography about the life and art of Anna Maria van Schurman, the first female to attend university in Europe! After learning about her remarkable story and looking at examples of her work, they drew a portrait and taped it to the back of a plastic sheet. You can use plexiglass or even cut plastic sheets from recycled plastic containers. Then use an etching needle to trace and etch the drawing into the surface of the plastic. Next, take a small piece of cardboard to push the ink into the indents. Wipe away the ink from the surface using a dry paper towel. While doing that, you want to soak some paper in water. Blot the paper dry before placing it onto the surface of the plastic. Use your fist to gently rub the back of the paper, transferring the ink. Pull back the paper and place the work in a safe place to dry!

You can repeat this process as many times as you want! Just make sure to wash the ink from the plastic before it dries. Some of my artists used watercolor to paint their portraits after, and some experimented with abstract painted paper as well. The possibilities are endless, and this was definitely a fun new printmaking process that my young artists loved exploring!
