This is series of simulated landings with a UMX Twin Otter sporting some custom long travel, shock absorbing, magnetic landing gear. The idea is to get a better view of the landing dynamics, gear compression, and stability under difficult wind conditions and with poor piloting. (That would be me.). Ultimately, the goal is to get an understanding of how magnetic arrested landing gear can be used for full scale STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft that are used for UAM (Urban Air Mobility - AKA Air Taxi) applications. These aircraft would need to land on very short runways in all weather conditions. Some of those runways might be at the top of a building lie a parking garage. I realize that this looks like it would terrify, if not outright kill, the passengers, but this is just a small model and the wind conditions were intentionally extreme. Also, a full scale aircraft would benefit from electromagnets, not permanent magnets, which would be used to modulate the braking strength as conditions require.
