The main reasons to mulch your garden spaces are to conserve and retain moisture, suppress weeds, add fertility over time and to be pleasing to the eye. Bare soil is dead soil as the earth needs a covering to allow beneficial organisms to live and thrive in the soil. There are many types of mulch but I find wood-chip products to be the most beneficial for all the goals of mulching.

There are multiple considerations when choosing a type of wood-chip mulch for your garden. Some main considerations are whether you are using the mulch in a food or flower garden, do you have access to free or low cost wood-chips, do you have the financial resources to purchase mulch, what look do you prefer for your landscaping, do you have the ability/energy/interest to put in the labor necessary to install and regularly add more chips and do the wood-chips contain possible debris or contaminants?

This video discusses the three main types of bulk wood-chips that are available to the urban gardener outside of the big box store bags, including fresh wood chips from tree service companies, the cedar wood chips you get from nurseries and landscaping companies and the wood-chips available from landfills.
