This little video, of the Lundy Island ferry MV Oldenburg arriving alongside the quay at Bideford, is a prime example of how you can never be too old or experienced to forget something really basic. My wife's nephew and his wife had just finished working on Lundy Island for the past four years. When I found out they were making their final trip back to the mainland today and that the weather was predicted to be near perfect for filming, I drove the 28 miles to Bideford with my wife and two sisters-in-law to record the ship's arrival. After selecting a vantage point away from the crowds along the front I painstakingly checked through all the drone's (DJI Mini 3 Pro) settings and was just chatting to my wife when one of my sister's-in-law shouted: "The ship's coming!" My intention had been to get the drone out over the centre of the river to film the Oldenburg's approach, before swinging around and flying alongside briefly before tracking her approach to the quay. I powered up the controller, powered on the drone, and waited anxiously for the controller to acquire sufficient satellites for a safe take-off. The ship was now almost parallel with me, but when I selected take-off...nothing happened. I had forgotten to put a battery in the drone! By the time I got the M3P airborne I had missed the opportunity for the initial planned moves and forgotten everything else I had intended to record, so what you see here is the just about watchable residue of what I ended up filming. You live and learn, lol!
