How Much Do Firefighters Get paid?

Well a normal shift for a firefighter will consist of 4 days on and 4 days off. This may sound great but 2 of those work days will be around 10.5 hours whilst the other two will be even longer at around 13.5 hours at night. The following four days off is nice though.

In order to get the job in the first place you’ll usually need to be older than 17.5 and have at least a C in English and Maths. Joining a fire cadets will certainly help you land the role as well. You can become a fire cadet from the age of 13.

If you do pass the interview and physical tests you’ll do a 13 weeks course learning about the equipment, procedures and emergency care. On top of this theory you’ll be tackling real fires at training facilities at places like this.

Whilst you’re in training you’ll be paid around £27,200. However, once you’ve completed training and are deemed a “Competent” firefighter this will go up to £36,226.

Like the military or police, there are certain firefighter ranks. The next step up from Competent firefighter is Crew Manager. At this rank you’ll earn up to £40,200. Up from that is Watch Manger where you can earn up to £45,000 followed by station manager topping out at £51,525 and Group Manger where you’ll top out at around £60,000. Lastly if you make it all the way to Area Manager you could be on around £70,000.

On top of this Those under the rank of Group Manager can earn overtime ranging from £18.62 per hour as a trainee all the way to £35.30 as a Station Manager. Additionally, certain areas of the country, like London, may pay slightly more or have slightly different training or requirements.
