It's a simple, but powerful request.
"Give where you live," said Jaunita James, president and CEO of the Fairfield County Community Foundation.
In support of local nonprofits, today's Fairfield County Giving Day is encouraging the community to donate to organizations online before midnight.
"Community giving day events like this help to bolster all of us," said James, "And that's what our intention is. To help our nonprofits increase their capacity to increase their impact."
The campaign is organized by the Fairfield County Community Foundation in collaboration with Bank of America. Almost 300 nonprofits from the region are participating.
"We're Stamford's longest running and only nonprofit producing theater company, but we're a fairly small engine when it comes to the size of other large organizations in the arts community," said Lou Ursone, executive director of Curtain Call. "So the dollars that we can raise on a day like this today is a huge impact on our organization."
More money raised means more points the nonprofits receive. The giving day is also a competition between organizations.
"We were one of the first fifty organizations to raise $1,000, so we got an automatic thousand-dollar match. And we had a lot of contributions and raised a lot of money so we picked up another $1,500. So we've already picked up over $10,000 this morning," said Ursone.
"It really is a unique opportunity and I hope this is the first of many years of Fairfield County Giving Day because it's a wonderful way to generate enthusiasm and support," said Laurie Bradbury treasurer of the Ridgefield Chorale. The organization also won prizes for the amount of donations they received.
