In this video, we explore the double-edged role of artificial intelligence (AI) in climate change. The expansion of data centers, which are the backbone of AI, plays a significant role in the rising energy demand. With over 8,000 data centers worldwide, energy consumption is projected to increase by up to 160% by 2030, comparable to the energy usage of entire countries. Companies like Google and Microsoft face scrutiny for their rising emissions, underscoring the urgent need for a shift toward renewable energy sources.

Despite these challenges, AI is being used to optimize processes, reduce energy consumption, and predict extreme weather events. However, issues such as water usage for cooling and the “Jevons paradox” – where efficiency improvements lead to higher overall consumption – remain obstacles. Solutions like more efficient chips, underwater data centers, and transparent regulations are being explored to mitigate AI’s environmental impact.
