Can AI Help You Show Up Higher In Search?
Ok, the other day, one of my clients received a call from a salesman that got his attention.
The caller said there was new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that would help his towing business show up higher in the search results.
And he offered to set up an appointment with one of their AI Experts to learn more.
Now, my friend has been around a while, so he was a bit skeptical.
People are always trying to sell you the newest thing.
Anyway, we talked about it and were curious, so he scheduled a call and I got on the phone as well and listened to what the guy had to say.
The presentation was, well, salesy…and focused on keywords and business listings.
And it took about 20 minutes, but there was no mention of AI.
So, finally, I asked. “What about using AI for local SEO?”
And, he was confused.
Because he didn’t know what I was talking about.
That’s when we learned that the initial salesman was an affiliate.
He only got paid if he set up the appointment. Regardless of if he had to lie to do so.
Pretty crappy, don’t you think? So, be careful.
There are a lot of shifty people in this space.
Anyway, let’s talk about AI for local business.
Can AI help you show up above your competition locally?
That’s the question.
Specifically the AI Overview section that appears above everything else in many search results.
I’m sure you’ve seen what I’m talking about.
Anyway, I’m not going to get too technical here, but Google uses the intent of the person doing the search to determine what kind of results they see.
Ok?
For example: if they’re looking for information, like “How to fly a kite.” There’s a good possibility that the AI Overview section will appear and give them a ton of info.
But if they search “Tow truck near me,” Google understands that they’re looking for hands-on help immediately and don’t want to waste their time reading about the services towing companies provide.
So when someone needs a tow truck, what Google shows is the Google Business Profile section, not the AI results.
So, don’t fall for all the hype.
Yes, AI is cool and can do a lot of things.
But it’s not the game changer, at least not yet, that some people want you to believe it is.
