STORYLINE:
Opposition parties on Wednesday accused Pakistan's government of delaying elections to avoid likely defeat and said they feared the move could lead to more violence in a country still shaken by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
A senior Election Commission official told The Associated Press late on Tuesday that the commission had put back the polls, originally planned for January 8, because of turmoil triggered by Bhutto's killing.
He indicated the new date would not be before the second week of February, but refused to disclose the exact schedule before a formal announcement later on Wednesday.
The opposition alleged authorities were postponing the polls to help the ruling party, which is allied to President Pervez Musharraf.
Many believe Bhutto's party would get a sympathy boost if the vote takes place on time.
Bhutto had accused elements in the ruling party of plotting to kill her, a charge it vehemently denies.
The killing of the former prime minister triggered three days of nationwide unrest that killed at least 58 people and caused tens of (m) millions of dollars in damage.
In Islamabad some of Benazir Bhutto's supporters burnt effigies of President Musharraf in protest at his government.
"Our leader was murdered, our nation was murdered, our judiciary was murdered, our humanity was murdered, but most of all the Bhutto family has been murdered," one protester, Kazda Murtaza, said.
Also on Wednesday French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner met with his Pakistani counterpart Inam ul Haque, President Pervez Musharraf, and caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Mian Soomro
Later Kouchner cancelled a visit to Bhutto's hometown of Larkana.
Bhutto's home province of Sindh was especially hard hit by the violence and the army remains on the streets.
Ten election offices were burned.
In Larkana, where hundreds of mourners have paid their respects at Bhutto's mausoleum, the streets however were quiet on Wednesday.
