The Syrian Ministry of the Interior announced the foiling of ISIS plans to carry out a series of suicide bombings during New Year's celebrations in several Syrian provinces, including the city of Aleppo.

According to the ministry, intelligence gathered through close monitoring of the organization's cell movements and information exchange with counterterrorism partners helped uncover ISIS's intentions to attack churches and public gathering places during the New Year's celebrations.

The ministry also added that while on duty at a checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj district of Aleppo, one of its employees became suspicious of a man who was later identified as an ISIS member.
When attempting to confirm his identity, the terrorist opened fire, killing one police officer. The gunman then blew himself up, wounding two other employees who tried to intervene and detain him. Sources told Al-Hadath TV that the gunman was heading to a Christian church in Aleppo. Based on this information, serious preventative security measures were taken, including strengthening security around churches, deploying static and mobile patrols, and setting up checkpoints in various areas of Aleppo.
