Thanks to the great state voucher, an incentive of the Government of South Australia to boost local tourism, we were able to experience the Mayfair Hotel Adelaide for 1 night..and it was worth the visit. The hotel may look underwhelming for a 5-star hotel, but don’t let that fool you. The vibe that the staff brings is enough to change that “what a plain-looking hotel” first impressions to a welcoming atmosphere that allows for a truly relaxing staycation.

It’s not the first time that we went to this hotel (but this is the first time that we actually stayed for the night!). The first time that we went here, it was to go to The Den Bistro for a high-tea experience. I never thought that I was in a 5-star hotel because of how the lobby looked: low-ceiling, a relatively small lobby, and that lack of impact that you usually feel when you enter a lobby of a 5 star hotel. However, the one thing that gave me a favorable opinion of the hotel for the first time is it’s smell. The lobby smells sooo nice. The smell left such a good impression on me that I now correlate the words “wonderful smell” to Mayfair Hotel. Enough for me to want to come back and stay for a night out of curiosity of wanting to know how their room smells like too. I just want to have a whiff...and man oh man they didn’t disappoint...the whole freaking hotel smells good! Yup. I realize I’m starting to sound creepy.

Other than the smell though, what the hotel lacked in impact, they more than make up for it by their staff. Everyone has that megawatt smile on their faces that didn’t look creepy or fake at all. They all look genuine and they embody the word “Hospitality” in every sense of the word. It’s because of them that the initially plain looking lobby transforms into a space that exudes simple elegance. Cheesy, I know, but that’s how it made me feel. It made me realize that even though the designs are not boombastic, it was simple, intentional, and functional. It’s a perfect marriage of the old-world elegance to the modern luxurious design.

We stayed at the 9th floor of the hotel in a Deluxe King Room facing King William Road. The room looks gorgeous. It was spacious enough for our family and has all the basic amenities that you need for a great stay (except for mouth hygiene stuff. It thought it was weird that I still had to request for a dental hygiene kit at the lobby of a 5-star hotel. Aren’t these things supposed to be included in the room?). There is a good selection of drinks in the complimentary minibar which is refreshed daily. There is a selection of watch-on-demand movies that you have to pay for each film or you can pay for the watch-all-can rate for 24 hours. They have a reasonable selection of film (even adult films for the frisky you *wink wink*). Other than that, they have Foxtel and Free-to-Air TV channels. Their toilet is of reasonable size too and carries Appelles Apothecary and Labs Black Collection toiletries. It was a bit of a disappointment as we were expecting a bathtub and rainwater shower when we booked for the room but I guess we looked at the picture of a different type of room. Nevertheless, the overhead hand shower works nicely and doesn’t suffer the sudden temperature fluctuations other hotels have...although it does take a while to get to the right temperature. Once you find the right temperature thought, it stays that way even if you shower for an hour (I only showered for 30 mins...don’t judge).

The main star of the room though, is the bed. That bed is hands down the best bed I have ever laid my back, butt, front, head, and the rest of my body on in my entire life. Rayne agrees too as she slept in when she usually is the first one to wake-up. Mayfair hotel deserves their 5-star rating just for that bed alone. It’s sooo ridiculously good that I lack words to describe how good it feels. Don’t take my word for it though. They’ve been awarded Best Bed in Australia by Gourmet Traveller back in 2018. Our experience sleeping on it for a night? We had the best sleep in a hotel. Ever. :)

Overall, we had a great time at Mayfair Hotel. We never realized how awesome it is to just walk to rundle mall for a stroll and come back to your accommodation without worrying about catching a bus or tram or even thinking about how expensive your parking ticket will be. This is something locals like myself take for granted. The location of Mayfair hotel is so central and perfect that you are literally staying at the heart of the vibrant Adelaide City.

Mayfair Hotel is located at 45 King William Street (corner of Hindley St and King William St). Parking is available not at the hotel itself but at the adjacent Wilson Parking (30 Hindley St). You get a discounted rate of 25 AUD per 24 hours. You can get the discount voucher from the reception desk.
