#Pancreas is an organ in upper abdomen. Function of pancreas is to secrete enzymes to digest the food. Pancreas secretes the enzymes by pancreatic duct in duodenum.

Sudden inflammation of pancreas is called #acute #pancreatitis

Causes of acute pancreatitis are.

1. #Gall #bladder #stone: Gall bladder stone can pass in common bile duct and obstruct duct of pancreas and cause acute pancreatitis
2. #Alcohol can cause inflammation of pancreas
3. Hypercalcemia due to increased parathormone level or vitamin intoxication can lead to acute pancreatitis
4. Increased triglyceride level more than 1000mg/dL can cause acute pancreatitis
5. Trauma to upper abdomen can lead to acute pancreatitis
6. Some time pancreatitis can develop after ERCP

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis
1. Severe pain in upper abdomen boring to back, relived by bending forward
2. Vomiting
3. Abdomen distension
4. Decreased passage of flatus
5. Constipation
6. Few patients have breathing difficulty and decreased urine

Diagnosis: 2 out of following 3 parameters
1. Classical pain of acute pancreatitis
2. Increased serum amylase and lipase
3. USG or CT showing acute pancreatitis
Treatment
1. Most of patients have mild pancreatitis
2. Few patients have organ failure in the form of kidney failure, breathing difficulty, and pancreatic fluid leakage and are classified as severe pancreatitis
3. Patients are admitted and started on IV fluids
4. Organ support in form of Oxygen, and if required dialysis and ventilator support
5. Antibiotics if infection occur
6. Endoscopic or external drainage of infected pancreatic fluid
Prevention of future attacks
1. Gall bladder surgery if stone present
2. Stop alcohol
3. Control calcium and triglyceride level
