This is an absolutely gorgeous, Made in the USA Gibson mandolin. This was made in the Nashville factory in 2003 during the tenure of the late Charlie Derrington. Gibson mandolins of this era saw a return to traditional form and consistently have a wonderful voicing that bluegrass players seem to gravitate toward. The advantage of owning a 22 year old instrument is the wood has had time to season and cure which enhances the tonal characteristics of the instrument. This is one of the reasons that people are drawn to vintage mandolins vs. new instruments. These are made by true craftsmen and this instrument will last you a lifetime.

It has a beautiful sunburst finish with highly figured maple brown back and sides. An F5G is built the same as the F5 Fern, just not as much binding, with a single bound top and unbound back and headstock. I think the more expensive bound Fern's are not as pretty. I prefer the unbound back which shows off the beautiful figured maple. It still has all the design features that give the F5 its legendary tone, including a hand-fitted dovetail neck joint, an absolutely gorgeous solid flamed maple neck, sides and back, solid spruce top, a flat ebony fingerboard, tone bar bracing, and a hand-tuned tone chamber. The treble extension on the fretboard has been removed to allow access to the sweet spot for picking. This is a classic sounding mandolin with good response all across the strings and up and down the neck. The frets and fretboard have been polished and it has a new set of strings. The mandolin plays like butter and it sounds like what you expect from the craftsmen at the Nashville plant. It comes with a nice hardshell case.

Condition
I will do my best to describe the condition. Please refer to the pictures and video to determine the condition since I am not an expert at determining the condition. I am also considering that the instrument is 22 years old.

Playability - Excellent

Finish - Spruce top - Good condition considering the age. It has various marks in the top that you would expect for a 22 year old mandolin. Nothing major, but definitely not in mint condition. No cracks in the top or repairs. There is finish wear under the place where the treble extension was. Please zoom up on the pictures for more detail.

Finish - Back and neck - Excellent - While it is not in mint condition, this is the highlight of the mandolin. I love figured flame maple and this maple does not disappoint. There are two dents on the side. Please watch the video to see these spots. They seem to be more visible in the video.
