In 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were devastated by the Great Kantō Earthquake, which struck on September 1st at 11:58 a.m. The powerful quake destroyed thousands of wooden buildings and triggered massive fires, as many people were cooking at the time. Strong winds caused the fires to spread rapidly, turning large parts of both cities into ashes. Yokohama, a major port city, was almost completely destroyed, with its harbor, warehouses, and railways collapsing. Tokyo also suffered enormous losses, especially from firestorms that killed thousands of people. More than 100,000 lives were lost, making it one of the deadliest disasters in Japanese history. Despite the devastation, the disaster led to major urban reforms and the modernization of both cities.
