Step 1: set a monthly budget
MONTHLY BUDGET EXAMPLE (made up numbers)
Monthly income = $3000
Rent = $1200
Car (payment, gas, insurance) = $450
Phone, cable and other bills = $350
Groceries and food = $300
Discretionary spending (entertainment, fun, etc.) = $200
LEFTOVER = $500
Step 2: Set up $500 a month payment to go automatically into a savings account (as a monthly auto transfer) ideally in a separate bank so it’s harder to access.

This alone allows Ryan and I to save several thousands of dollars a year without even having to think about it and was the main way we saved for the down payment of our home. It also forces us to stick to our monthly budget!
