O MOSTEIRO DE LORVÃO, aquando da sua fundação, foi dedicado a S. Mamede (1:00) e a S. Pelágio (1:03) e era um mosteiro masculino. No século XIII, D. Teresa, filha de D. Sancho I, procede à reforma do mosteiro transformando-o num mosteiro feminino cisterciense. Na mesma altura, a sua irmã D. Sancha funda em Coimbra o mosteiro feminino de Celas. Os restos mortais das duas irmãs estão em túmulos de prata (1:06; 1:12), na capela-mor do Mosteiro de Lorvão. O interior do mosteiro é grandioso e harmonioso, construído no século XVIII. Uma grade de ferro forjado (1:42) com aplicações de bronze dourado estabelece a separação entre o coro e a igreja. Sobre a grade construiu-se um órgão neoclássico (1:33). Para além de possuir a escultura pétrea de Santa Maria do Lorvão, ou Senhora da Vida (2:18), o coro apresenta um dos melhores cadeirais (1:50) portugueses formado por cadeiras de espaldar alto em madeira de jacarandá preto brasileiro e nogueira. Na Sacristia (2:35) e em duas outras salas (3:00; 3:13) estão algumas das preciosidades do mosteiro. Numa das salas está a ser restaurada (3:02) uma das duas telas pintadas que normalmente se encontram expostas na igreja (1:27). O claustro principal (3:30) data do século XVII e está dividido em dois andares. No jardim central do claustro há uma fonte com um obelisco (3:48). Lorvão fica no concelho de Penacova, a cerca de 20 km de Coimbra.

THE MONASTERY OF LORVÃO, at its foundation, was dedicated to St. Mamede (1:00) and St. Pelagius (1:03) and was a male monastery. In the thirteenth century, Dona Teresa, daughter of King Sancho I, reforms the monastery making it a Cistercian monastery for women. At the same time, her sister Dona Sancha founded in Coimbra the female monastery of Celas. The remains of the two sisters are in tombs of silver (1:06; 1:12) in the main chapel of the Monastery of Lorvão. The interior of the monastery is great and harmonious, built in the eighteenth century. A wrought iron fence (1:42) with gilded bronze applications establishes the separation between the choir and the church. Over the grid was constructed a neoclassical organ (1:33). Besides having the stony sculpture of Santa Maria do Lorvão, or Lady of Life (2:18), the choir presents one of the best Portuguese choir stalls (1:50) formed by high-backed wooden chairs in black Brazilian rosewood and walnut. In Sacristy (2:35) and in two other rooms (3:00; 3:13) there are some of the treasures of the monastery. In one of the rooms is being restored (3:02) one of two painted canvas which are usually exposed in the church (1:27). The main cloister (3:30), dating from the seventeenth century, is divided into two floors. In central cloister garden there is a fountain with an obelisk (3:48). Lorvão is in the county of Penacova, about 20 km from Coimbra.
