HANDLOOM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT-Looms of Assam

The Assamese women weave dreams in their looms. In fact, every rural household has a woman who weaves. But her income from the loom is very minimal and mostly catering to self & local needs. Therefore, to upscale the traditional handloom weaves, ASRLM undertook the Handloom Value Chain Development Project (Looms of Assam) where SHG women who are weavers are given trainings on product diversification, value addition and market linkages. They are encourage to make not only traditional dresses like mekhela chador but also explore the markets with urban dress materials like stoles, scarfs, tie, jackets and articles of home furnishing like cushion covers, bedsheets, pillow covers, dinning mats etc.

When members of 14 women Self Help Groups came together way back in 2013 to form an organization called the HIMALAY VILLAGE ORGANIZATION in Titabor, Jorhat district of Assam, little did they know that they are about to set trends for years of blending traditions with innovation and skill. Today, the organization stands testimony to weaving their dreams, to empowering and to setting an example of encouragement and self- reliance.
