Confession time, friends: I am not good with the bow. I'm deadly from 3 feet when wolves come charging, but any distance beyond that and it's a crapshoot. The BOSS (Bow-Only Stalker Shooter) challenge is meant to fix that. This is a bow-only Stalker run with non-lethal wolf struggles. My KPIs (killing performance indicators): 250 wolves, 100 each of deer, rabbits, and ptarmigans, 50 bears, and 10 moose. I must also fully use up at least 10 bows. I will get good or lose my mind trying.
Turns out we are not, in fact, the last person on Earth. Part 6 of the Tales from the Far Territory DLC, "Broken Silence", has added the Trader as an optional new feature. We kick off this episode with our first interaction, having a brief (and awkward) conversation before getting down to business (4:25) and trading for a bag of flour, 10 kg of salt, and a recipe for wolfskin pants. The first two just call for raw meat and water, which will be easy, but the latter wants lamp oil, cloth, and three car batteries. There is much hauling in Astrid's future. While commerce calls, real life intrudes and we take care of the bear that wanders through the village (26:00) with the help of Archery 5. Harvesting nearby wolf carcasses seems to give the meat we need, but unbeknownst to me the Trader won't accept anything under 50 percent condition, which most of the meat definitely is.
Hauling the wolf meat to the Trader's drop point makes us very popular with the local wolves and the Misanthrope's Island bear, but this is actually to our advantage. Luring the bear to the nearby fishing hut lets us kill it in one shot (44:15), and taking out four lurking wolves not only makes our deliveries safer but also provides fresh meat for the Trader. NOTE: fresh ingredients do lose condition in the drop box, so plan accordingly. Astrid harvests her kills and deposits the hides and guts at Misanthrope's before tracking down her earlier bear kill (1:26:50), quartering and hauling it to the blue house across from the Quonset. While trying to complete our trade, we discover the Trader won't accept a 43 percent condition jerry can with the needed lamp oil (2:02:00). Fortunately we have two jerry cans that fit the bill back in the coal mine. Completing the trade is simple enough (2:33:10), and sure enough upon hitting the "complete trade" button the fog almost instantly lifts and brings an aurora. We signal to the Trader -- whom we learn is named Sutherland -- and sure enough the next morning there's loot in the drop box and a mysterious ship sitting just off the coast (2:49:30). Even if the island isn't necessarily more crowded, life on Great Bear feels like it's only going to get stranger from here. From the December 16, 2024, stream at / trooperbari .
