Just a short #ferry ride from Athens, and its port #Piraeus, Aegina Island offers a delightful escape into a world of stunning beaches, rich #history, and vibrant local culture. Known for its pistachio groves, ancient ruins, and picturesque villages, Aegina is an island that promises a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Join us as we uncover the top beaches and main places of interest that make Aegina a captivating destination in the #Saronic Gulf.
It has almost 13000 permanent residents and its name derives from Aegina, the mother of the mythological #hero #Aeacus, who was born on the island and became its #king.
Two-thirds of its land consists of an extinct #volcano, while at its stony but fertile plains, vines, almonds, olives, figs and the characteristic #pistachio are being cultivated.
In antiquity, Aegina was competing with the neighbouring state of Athens over the sea power. During the Greek War of Independence, Aegina became an administrative centre for the Greek revolutionary authorities. Ioannis #Kapodistrias was briefly established here.
The island's main town, Aegina #town, reflects its long history, with a charming blend of neoclassical architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant waterfront #cafes. Stroll through the narrow streets and explore the local #shops selling Aegina’s famous pistachios. The town's lively harbor is a great place to enjoy fresh #seafood while watching the boats come and go.
Visit the Tower of #Markellos, a Venetian fortification that once hosted the government of the embryonic Greek state.
Next to the port lies #Colona, the #Acropolis with the sanctuary of Apollo. Here is housed the Archaeological #Museum.
One of the most significant ancient #monuments on the island, the Temple of #Athena #Aphaia is a must-visit. Situated on a hilltop, the temple dates back to around 500 BC and offers stunning views of the island and the surrounding sea. It is part of the sacred triangle of temples, along with the #Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of #Poseidon at #Sounion.
Agia #Marina is a picturesque settlement, located on the eastern coast of the island. Agia Marina beach is one of Aegina's most popular beaches. With its golden sand and clear, shallow waters, it is ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts. The beach is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and beachfront tavernas serving delicious local #cuisine.
#Perdika is a #cosmopolitan village. Walk along the marina, enjoy the aromas and views of this awesome environment.
A caique ticket from Perdika may transfer you to paradise. This is #Moni island, one of the most unique and little known parts of Greece.
#Fyki beach lies next to Perdika and worth your attention.
#Marathonas Beach offers a more tranquil setting. The beach is divided into two sections: Marathonas A and Marathonas B. Both beaches feature pebbled and sandy areas, crystal-clear waters, and scenic views. Marathonas is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea, with several tavernas and beach bars nearby.
The Monastery of Agios #Nektarios, a miracle worker Saint, is a major orthodox pilgrimage in Greece. It features impressive architecture, beautiful frescoes, and a serene atmosphere.
Next to the Monastery, #Paleochora, often referred to as the " #Mystras of Aegina," is the #medieval capital of the island, now in ruins.
#Souvala Beach offers a mix of sand and pebbles, and waters that believed to have healing properties.
Aegina Island, with its rich history and beautiful beaches offers a perfect getaway next to the Greek Capital! Discover the magic of Aegina, where every corner holds a story and every moment is a step back in time.
