Hi Rockhounds. Let’s identify Pumice. Pumice is an igneous rock that is typically light gray, yellowish, red, or tan in color. Pumice is an extrusive igneous rock that is made by volcanoes when the lava is ejected during an eruption. The pumice forms outside of the volcano. Identifying Pumice Igneous rocks is fun when you learn how geologists use different properties of the rock to determine its name. You can learn to identify rocks like Pumice using color, texture, and mineral content.

Pumice is made primarily of the minerals feldspar, quartz, and mica, which are the same minerals as granite, rhyolite, and obsidian, but it looks different because the rock is formed by a different method. Pumice is formed when the molten lava is thrown in the air, becomes frothy and sponge-like, and then cools into a rock. Pumice is so lightweight that it floats on water. Pumice is often used in the formation of abrasives and insulation.
