The Douglas F4D Skyray nicknamed the “Ford” is an American carrier-based supersonic fighter or interceptor aircraft manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company. The F4D Skyray was known for being the first carrier-launched aircraft to hold the world's speed record at 752.943 mph and the first aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. The F4D Skyray was a cantilever mid-wing monoplane with modified delta wings incorporated with elevons to work as elevators to its ailerons. The F4D is the last fighter aircraft that the Douglas Aircraft Company produced before it merged with McDonnell Douglas. The maiden flight of the F4D Skyray took place on the 23rd of January 1951 and it went into active service in 1956. Primary users were the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. There were approx. 422 F4D Skyray produced. The F4D Skyray retired from active service on September 1964. Check out image at https://goo.gl/n0KXGX
