During the 1950s, the United States established a testing site in the Nevada desert where U.S. troops at Camp Desert Rock witnessed explosions in a disturbing video. These military personnel underwent testing to evaluate their response to the intense sound, shockwaves, dust, and the enduring effects of radiation.

Despite scientists’ awareness of radiation dangers at the time, participating soldiers were provided minimal protection, often only equipped with radiation badges, many of which were later damaged or lost. Initially, short-term exposure was not considered significantly harmful, but over time, these atomic veterans developed health issues. Additionally, residents near the Nevada testing site also experienced health problems.

Between 1953 and 1957, five other Desert Rock exercises occurred before the military ceased testing. In 1990, the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act was enacted, providing compensation to individuals affected by or involved in nuclear tests, including the atomic veterans.
