White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took questions as Secretary of State Antony Blinken makes a last-ditch effort in the Middle East to secure a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and subsequent release of hostages ahead of an Israeli offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Blinken said Monday that he's urged Israel "to take the necessary steps to meet the needs of civilians."
