Dang Ngoc Long - Mienman

“Mienman” for solo guitar is a short piece by the Vietnamese composer, guitarist, and actor Dang Ngoc Long, and was first published in the early 2000s. Similarly to the rest of Long’s compositional output, the piece is heavily inspired by traditional Vietnamese folk music. Despite being ostensibly given the E Major key signature, “Mienman” constantly wavers between the keys of A Major and E Major. Adding to the confusion, the pivot notes, D and D-sharp, do not appear even once in the work. The two warring keys eventually reach a compromise of sorts when the coda settles on an ambiguous suspended chord.
