Trapped on all sides, the UAE has hardly any way left to escape the consequences of its actions. The Emirates has been backing the RSF in Sudanese civil war since the conflict started in April 2023

Multiple investigations and reports have revealed that the RSF militia has been acquiring weapons and financial assistance from the UAE. The militia has been accused of engaging in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing

In January 2025, the Biden administration officially declared that the RSF had committed genocide in the Darfur region. The genocide designation was expected to impact the RSF’s supporters, particularly the UAE

The U.S. Department of the Treasury also declared sanctions against the RSF leader, Mohammad Hamdan. The sanctions also targeted an individual and seven companies linked to the militia group

However, America’s response was condemned for being “too little too late”. It was asserted that the sanctions would be insufficient to stop flow of arms to the RSF. U.S. Representative Sara Jacobs had stated that the way to end the Sudan war is to stop UAE’s interference

The UAE’s involvement in Sudan war also came under the radar of European Parliament, which was considering sanction discussions around the Emirates’ role in Sudan.

The European Commission acknowledged allegations implicating the UAE in war crimes committed by the RSF, and was set to assess the Emirates’ role in backing the RSF that is accused of human rights and civilian atrocities

The discussions were also set to include the diplomatic efforts required to deter UAE’s support for the militia group. The Parliament was also considering whether sanctions should be imposed against the Emirati entities complicit in supporting the RSF

Throughout the war, there have been several calls for sanctions against Abu Dhabi over its backing of the RSF. The increasing scrutiny around the Emirati involvement in Sudan has led to a fear within the UAE

The Arab nation has been approaching the U.S. lobbyists to counter calls for direct sanctions against the UAE. While the EU is also moving ahead with considering sanctions against the Emirates, the risks for the UAE are higher. The growing international actions against the UAE are not just necessary but also likely to yield positive results.
