(20 Sep 2018) Hundreds of archaeological pieces have been delivered to Peru's Culture Ministry on Thursday, items recovered from around the globe.
The repatriated pieces include ceramic, pottery, textiles and other artifacts belonging to the Chancay, Nazca, Chimu, Recuay cultures.
During an event in Lima, Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs Néstor Popolizio said the items were repatriated from Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador, as well as Australia, United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland.
"I'm very pleased to deliver today, through my dear friend, the minister of culture, to the Culture Ministry, this lot of nearly 1,700 pieces belonging to the cultural patrimony of the nation," he said.
Earlier this month, Peru celebrated the return of an ancient funeral mask made of gold following a two-decade legal battle to repatriate the smuggled antiquity from Germany.
The 8th century mask depicting a pre-Incan deity was seized in 1999 in Germany from a Turkish art dealer arrested for selling looted objects. It was handed over recently to Peru's embassy in Berlin.
The mask made of hammered gold alloy with silver eyes is one of the most emblematic of 9,000 art objects Peru has repatriated the last decade.
Authorities believe the mask was taken from Peru in the late 1990s.
