Severe flooding across southern Mozambique has devastated over 700,000 people. Communities around Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave national parks are severely affected by flood waters. Early assessments indicate that the scale and impact of this disaster surpass those of the catastrophic floods of 2000, widely regarded as the worst in southern Africa’s living memory. 

The floods have caused widespread destruction of homes, crops, infrastructure and access routes, leaving thousands of families isolated and without food, clean water or basic services.  

Following the declaration of a state of emergency and an appeal to aid organisations for assistance, Peace Parks Foundation is supporting relief efforts in coordination with the Mozambique Disaster Relief Agency (INGD), the National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), local authorities, Karingani, other private sector partners, and donors.

Support is currently focused on addressing the following priority needs:
Immediate food assistance to prevent acute hunger in flood-affected communities.
Provision of seeds to restore livelihoods and food security, as crops have been wiped out and the next harvest has been destroyed. This support is time-critical: without immediate seed distribution and planting, communities risk going a full year without a harvest.
Urgent disease prevention and public health measures to curb the rising risks of cholera, malaria and malnutrition in flood-affected areas.
Mitigation of longer-term ecological impacts, recognising that prolonged food insecurity increases pressure on natural resources.  

Where your support makes a difference:
27,000 people (about 5,400 families) are affected across areas surrounding Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave national parks.
To support one family with basic supplies for the next three months costs approximately $150.
Since 17 January 2026, funding and in-kind support has been mobilised to enable Peace Parks to provide food and essential supplies to 1,978 families in 16 villages, with 13 tonnes of food distributed so far, and a further 64 tonnes of dry goods and food currently being distributed.

To date, $838,000 in cash and in-kind support has been mobilised towards the wider emergency response, which is 30% of our total target of $2.8m required over the next three months.
