After his high school graduation, young Tennessean Jimmy Griffin left his home in Memphis in July 1962 to follow his dreams (and neighbors Johnny and Dorsey Burnette) to Hollywood to become a successful musician. Through the Burnette brothers Jimmy landed a deal with Reprise Records, where he recorded a handful of singles and the album Summer Holiday. He then moved to Imperial Records with Dave Pell becoming his producer. For his second single with Imperial Jimmy sang Scottie Jackson's "Hard Row To Hoe" and the Calvin Carter-Jerry Butler-Curtis Mayfield R&B song "He Will Break Your Heart." The latter became a Number One hit ten years later for Tony Orlando and Dawn, retitled "He Don't Love You."
With keyboardist Lincoln Mayorga as orchestra manager and arranger, producer Dave Pell had over a dozen musicians playing together on November 18, 1965 to track four songs. Among them were guitarists Dennis Budimir and Bill Pitman; bassist George Callender, and marimba player/percussionist Julius Wechter of The Baja Marimba Band.
James was a songwriter, who partnered over the years with Michael Gordon, and later Robb Royer and David Gates, with whom he formed Bread when they realized they could record their songs better than anyone else.
