San Angelo River Walk Concho is Spanish for "shell". The river was littered with of freshwater Tampico pearly mussels. The Concho River has three primary feeds: the North, Middle, and the South.

The middle fork flows near Goodfellow Air Force Base and through San Angelo, Texas.

For a thousand years prior to colonization, Native Americans, “The Jumano” makes what’s to become San Angelo home.

1650 The Captain Diego del Castillo expedition finds the Concho.

1654 The Diego de Guadalajara expedition was launched to validate Castillo's findings.


1846 San Angelo is claimed by Spain, Mexico, Republic of Texas & the United States.

1866 Sept 21 Fort Concho, home to the 10th Cavalry Regiment, or the Black Cavalry known as Buffalo Soldiers is established

. Buffalo Soldiers were Indigenous Seminole & Black Americans. Black Seminole Scouts guided the troops through hostile territory

. 1867 San Angela is founded

. Settler Bartholomew J. DeWitt founded the village of Santa Angela. The village was named after his wife, Carolina Angela.

1883 The city changed its’ name to San Angelo on orders from the US. Post Office.

1888 The Santa Fe Railroad arrived

. 1889 Fort Concho is deactivated

. 1895 Tuberculosis (TB) outbreak hit the United States & many patients moved to San Angelo.

TB was considered a “"good death" as sufferers could arrange their affairs”

TB killed one in seven of all people on earth.

1928 San Angelo College (Texas Tech Univ) is founded.

1940 Goodfellow Air Force Base is established

. 1955 San Angelo Independent School District became one of the first Texas district to voluntarily integrate

. 2009 Census estimate, San Angelo has a total population of 101,004. San Angelo is considered the Concho City, the Pearl of the Conchos, and the Oasis of West Texas.

2013 Forbes; San Angelo was ranked fourth in the nation as the "Best Small Cities For Jobs”. This was basically a desk tour.
