The Fiat 127 Sport 70 hp was presented in September 1978.
It was Fiat's response to the growing demand for economical sports cars, derived from the series.
The recipe was simple: from a successful model, in this case the 127, a sporting variant was derived, with limited investments, for young people and lovers of sports driving.
The Sport 70 HP comes from the 1050 3-door version of the 127 Mk2.
Eesthetically, the sports characterization, specific for this model, is marked but not showy.
A plastic spoiler under the bumper and an aggressive black mask with grille-grey identify the front, sealed with the round Fiat logo and the "70 HP" tag.
On the front bonnet is a profile that surrounds the air-intake.
The side view shows the “127 Sport” writing on the bonnet ledge, a thread running through the entire car, the shock-resistant moldings with a "70 HP" tag, specific wheel rims.
The rear-view is distinguished by the spoiler which, connecting the side drips, runs the roof in width. Written "Sport" on the left side of the tailgate, the side-dish of the optical-group and the license-plate in matt black, the exhaust exit has a double chrome-plated .
The interiors have more complete instrumentation (tachometer, clock and oil pressure gauge).
2-spoke sports steering-wheel.
Beautiful sports front seats with headrest incorporated , covered in faux black leather and fabric with contrasting colored piping (orange with body orange or black, blue with silver.).
The color range includes 3 variants: Orange Racing 255; Black 610;Silver met. 625.
The mechanical part is distinguished by the 1049 engine( series “Brasile” ), that thanks to some tricks reached 70 hp and almost 8 kgm fo torque at 3000 rpm. Weber double-body carburetor.
The gearbox has a shorter final ratio.
the suspensions are revised in a sporty key and have a lower front anti-roll more rigid.
Enhanced braking system with larger calipers and brake-booster.
The wheels are specific, with sporty design and increased channel and fitted with 155/70 13 tires
The 127 Sport was a great success throughout Europe.
He had excellent road holding, safe and predictable.
Fun on curvy roads, it was a bad beast for more powerful cars, also thanks to the weight contained in 775 kg.
Good performance was combined with low consumption, often lower than the normal 127.
Thanks to the reduced price and ease of upgrade, became a protagonist of the races.
The low weight, the manageability and the sturdiness made it a good choice.
The robust and reliable engine lent itself to various levels of upgrade: the best came to 120/ 130 hp.
He asserted himself in rallies and above all in hill climbs.

The first and original 70 HP remained on the market until the beginning of 1981, when it underwent a small update: front cover completely black, the decals disappear on the front bonnet and 2 adhesive strips appear in the lower part of the side and on the lower part of the rear-door with the word "Sport".
Change the color range: Rosso Corsa 854,Black 601,Red met. 134,Silver met. 625,LightBlue Ice met.613).
Inside only the upholstery of the seats and door panels changes, now a showy multi-colored check.
This version, unofficially known as "70 HP restyling"or “Sport II”, is the rarest among the 127 Sport, because it remained on the list for about 9 months, until December 1981, when the "127 third series" was presented.
It was recognizable by the integral bumpers and the plastic bands on the sides, larger headlights, surrounded by a plastic molding.
Internally everything new: from the dashboard to the seats.
The “Sport Third Series”, this is the official name, was characterized by:
front spoiler integrated in the bumper, mask-grille in red, tailpipes at the wheel-arches, roof spoiler similar to that of the 70 HP but more angular, and another small aileron at the base of the rear window.
The wheels had aerodynamic plastic wheel covers and optional alloy wheels.
Inside: instrument cluster with tachometer, sports steering wheel (the same as the 70 HP), seats with separate head restraints and different fabrics, sports accelerator pedal and red led digital clock on the pavilion.
narrow choice of colors: Rosso Corsa 854,Black 601,Lightblue Ice met. 613.
Mechanical modifications: 1301 cc engine derived from Ritmo 70, with 75 hp REAL, torque 11 kgm at 3500 rpm, 5-speed gearbox.
This version had excellent performances, almost unbelievable considering the declared power.
In acceleration and recovery it went like many 2000 cc sedans : the engine was sporty and equipped with an excellent extension.
Thanks to the limited weight and the well-proportioned gearbox consumption was good.
Unofficially known as "127 Sport 75 HP Five Speed", leaves the market in December 1983 with the presentation of the Uno.
