The Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) in Bhubaneswar is a museum that showcases the diverse plant, animal, and geological wealth of the eastern region of India. Inaugurated in 2004, this museum operates under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change of the Government of India.
The foundation stone for the museum was laid on November 5, 1994, by the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Biju Patnaik. The museum was finally opened to the public on August 10, 2004, by the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik.
RMNH Bhubaneswar aims to provide non-formal environmental education to the public, especially students, to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our natural resources. The museum achieves this through its various exhibits and educational programs.
Key attractions and exhibits at the museum include:
Biodiversity Gallery: This gallery highlights the ecological relationships between plants and animals and emphasizes the importance of nature and natural resource conservation. It features exhibits from various regions, including Odisha, Northeast India, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Skeletons of large mammals: The museum boasts impressive skeletons of a Baleen Whale (considered one of the largest in India), a Toothed Whale, elephants, and a rhinoceros.
Taxidermy Gallery: Here, visitors can see preserved specimens of various animals like hyenas, cheetahs, and deer.
Geological Exhibits: The museum displays rocks, minerals, and fossils, providing insights into the geological history of the region.
Insect Corner: This section showcases a variety of preserved insects.
African Gallery: This exhibit displays flora and fauna from African forests and Madagascar.
Baobab: The museum grounds feature a Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata), believed to be one of the longest-living flowering plants in the world.
Discovery Room and Activity Room: These experiential resource centers offer hands-on learning opportunities for visitors.
RMNH Bhubaneswar also organizes various programs for teachers and students, such as workshops, nature camps, and competitions, to further promote environmental awareness.
