According to Hindu beliefs, the original abode of Vaishno Devi was Ardha Kunwari, a place about halfway between Katra town and the cave. She meditated in the cave for 9 months just like how a baby stays in its mother's womb for 9 months. It is said that when Bhairav Nath ran after Vaishno Devi to catch her. The Devi reached near a cave in the hill, she called up Hanuman and told him that "I would do penance in this cave for nine months, till then you should not allow Bhairav Nath to enter the cave." Hanuman obeyed the mother's orders. Bhairavnath was kept outside this cave and today this holy cave is known as 'Ardha Kunwari'.

The Vaishno Devi Temple is an important Hindu temple dedicated to Vaishno Devi located in Katra at the Trikuta Mountains within the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The temple is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas dedicated to Durga, who is worshipped as Vaishno Devi. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage centers of India. Every year millions of visitors visit the temple. During festivals like Navaratri, the count even increases to ten million (one crore) visitors. Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the richest temples in India.

1. How to trek to the Vaishno Devi temple?

The trek up to the Vaishno Devi temple begins at the yatra starting point in Katra and lasts about 15km. Before beginning, you need to register for the yatra at the registration centre at Katra bus stand to get your RFID Yatra Access Card. Depending on your pace and the number of breaks you take, the trek could last between three-six hours. You can choose to walk up the entire way, or opt for a palki or pony ride up. Folks offer these rides at the starting point as well as at Sanji Chhat, and drop you right at the point where the lines for the shrine entrance begin. The midpoint of the trek is named Adhkuwari, following which is a plateau called Sanji Chhat that many use as a resting point.

The trek features a moderate ascend, on a paved, sheltered pathway. If you’re walking up, make sure to keep an eye out for the palkis and ponies—they move pretty fast and you’re better off staying out of their way.


2. How to get to the Bhairavnath Temple?

About 2km uphill from the bhawan or main shrine complex is the Bhairavnath Temple. Many pilgrims make the second trek after their trip to the Vaishno Devi Temple. Though shorter than the first, the hour-long trek is steeper and therefore more challenging. This trek is not recommended for senior citizens and folks with limited mobility. Ponies are available for this trek too. Alternatively, you could book the five-minute cable car ride up. The aerial ropeway is operational from 9am to 5pm and needs to be booked online in advance. The ride is free for children under three; two-way ride for adults costs about Rs100. The queue for the ropeway ride tends to be long, so get there before your allotted time slot and prepare for some amount of waiting.

वैष्णो देवी मंदिर तक की यात्रा कटरा में यात्रा आरंभ बिंदु से शुरू होती है और लगभग 15 किमी तक चलती है। यात्रा शुरू करने से पहले, आपको अपना आरएफआईडी यात्रा एक्सेस कार्ड प्राप्त करने के लिए कटरा बस स्टैंड पर पंजीकरण केंद्र पर यात्रा के लिए पंजीकरण कराना होगा। आपकी गति और आपके द्वारा लिए गए ब्रेक की संख्या के आधार पर, ट्रेक तीन-छह घंटे के बीच रह सकता है। आप पूरे रास्ते पैदल चलना चुन सकते हैं, या पालकी या टट्टू की सवारी का विकल्प चुन सकते हैं। लोग इन सवारियों को शुरुआती बिंदु के साथ-साथ सांजी छत पर भी पेश करते हैं, और आपको ठीक उस बिंदु पर छोड़ देते हैं जहां मंदिर के प्रवेश द्वार के लिए लाइनें शुरू होती हैं। ट्रेक के मध्य बिंदु का नाम अधकुवारी है, जिसके बाद सांजी छत नामक एक पठार है जिसे कई लोग विश्राम स्थल के रूप में उपयोग करते है |
