Fans think Manny Pacquiao will be stopped by Mario Barrios having seen the legend's return to the gym. Pacquiao has extraordinarily announced his return in a world title fight at the age of 46 against WBC welterweight champion Barrios on July 19. He recently posted some short workout footage with the boxing fraternity showing some concern over his physical conditioning. But 'Pac Man' has now returned to his training base in Los Angeles, where he will work with renowned coach Freddie Roach. He flaunted his skills in a 'baseline session' where he shadow boxed with real speed, still possessing an element of his sensational technical ability. Pacquiao also worked the pads with Roach and tried to get his hands going with some crisp shots.

Clearly many are unhappy and worried with Pacquiao's decision, but he intends to still follow through with his ambitious plan. Many of the fears have arisen from his last fight, where he was battered in an exhibition by Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo. Pacquiao looked a shadow of his former self in the ring. And given he hasn't boxed professionally since losing to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, he is likely to be an overwhelming underdog. Nonetheless the title challenge has received the backing of the WBC, who have incredibly placed him at No.5 in the welterweight rankings.

Manny Pacquiao and his team arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday night to begin preparations for their July 19 comeback fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. The long in-negotiations fight is finally coming to fruition and is set to headline a PBC event in Las Vegas; an official announcement and press conference is imminent. The 46-year-old warhorse was joined by his wife Jinkee, longtime assistant coach Buboy Fernandez and personal assistant David Sisson, among others, as he made his way through a throng of people and into a black caravan to exit LAX.

By Monday morning, Pacquiao was going through his traditional public training routine at a local park in the Fairfax District. Pacquiao will hold training camp with his longtime coach, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach.
“Viva Manny to training at Wild Card,” Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao’s advisor and head of his promotional company, told The Ring. The powerful pair of Pacquiao and Roach was such a dynamic duo during their heyday that on Sunday, the City of Los Angeles honored Roach by designating the iconic gym property to "Freddie Roach Square" as the community commemorated 30 years of the gym’s existence.

Over the first weekend in June, the eight-division champion Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and switch his attention back to Barrios, a 30-year-old who wasn’t even born when the Filipino icon made his pro debut in 1995.

Pacquiao last fought as a pro in August 2021, a unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas. He’s engaged in exhibitions ever since, and the most recent performance in July against former K-1 champion Rukiya Anpo left many calling for Pacquiao to hang up the gloves for good.

Bob Arum has admitted he is “really concerned” for Manny Pacquiao as the boxing legend prepares to return to the ring aged 46. Pacquiao is set to challenge 30-year-old Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on 19 July, as the Filipino boxes professionally for the first time since 2021. In his last pro bout, “Pac Man” was outpointed by Yordenis Ugas. Pacquiao has boxed in exhibitions since, but Barrios should represent a significantly tougher challenge than his opponents in those bouts, as noted by Pacquiao’s former promoter Arum.

Mario Thomas Barrios is a Mexican-American professional boxer. He has held the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight championship since 2024. Previously, he held the World Boxing Association (WBA) (Regular version) super lightweight title from 2019 to 2021.
