(19 Nov 2014) Protesters and police were clearing up on Wednesday after a group of demonstrators tried to force their way into the city's Legislature Council building.
The situation was calm outside the building after tensions spiked overnight.
The protesters used metal barricades and concrete slabs to smash glass doors at the legislature before officers police rushed in to push them back.
Police used pepper spray, batons and riot shields against the umbrella-wielding protesters wearing masks, goggles and hardhats, who they said repeatedly charged their cordon and injured three officers.
Four men were arrested following the clashes, which came hours after authorities enforced a court order to clear some barricades from a small section of a site occupied by pro-democracy activists.
The violence apparently involved protesters who organised their action through an Internet forum known to attract people with radical views.
By daylight, the damage around the building was evident.
Glass doors were smashed and the main gate to the legislative had been destroyed.
The clashes underscore mounting frustration for some as the movement drags on for more than 50 days with no end in sight, though student leaders immediately distanced themselves from the violence.
One of the protesters, Terry Chick told AP that they will continue to fight for their core values - "an independent judiciary institution, an independent civil servants system and a Legislative Council which represents public opinion."
Protesters have occupied streets in Hong Kong since the end of September.
The protesters oppose the Chinese government's requirement that a panel of Beijing-friendly elites screen candidates in the inaugural 2017 election for Hong Kong's top official.
Chinese authorities have declared the gatherings illegal and neither the Hong Kong government nor the student leaders have shown any willingness to compromise.
