"Firefighters are participating with 17 fire engines and around 150 firefighters who have been working since approximately 3:30 in the afternoon. At this moment, the urban interface zone has been protected by our firefighters, also supporting CONAF's work in the higher areas with our ground crews. From our side, at least, the work is now decreasing."

STORYLINE:
Forest fires put Santiago on alert on Monday when flames blazed through hills in the Las Condes area, after burning at least 470 hectares (1161.4 acres), according to Chile’s National Forestry Corporation (CONAF).

Authorities have not yet found the source of the fire.

A cloud of smoke could be seen from different parts of the Chilean capital, which is experiencing a heat wave with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.

By Monday night, the blaze was burning near the Catholic University’s Claro Arena stadium.

The fire remains active and under combat, but its intensity is expected to decrease overnight, said Elke Huss Catalan, regional director of CONAF.

Huss Catalan added that, for the moment, the flames do not pose a threat to nearby homes, although she noted that firefighting efforts were complicated by afternoon winds, which spread the fire toward the mountain areas.

The municipality of Las Condes is under a yellow alert, according to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED).

By Monday afternoon, there were at least nine active fires across the country, three of which triggered some level of alert, CONAF reported.

In the O’Higgins region, in central Chile, the “Santa Monica” fire burned at least 50 hectares and placed the municipality of Litueche under red alert. The O’Higgins Fire Department also announced that a commander from the organization died on Monday while battling the flames.

The Chilean National Disaster Prevention and Response Service issued a red alert on Sunday for Santiago and five regions of the country due to a heat wave with temperatures ranging between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius.
