California in the late 1960s held an almost mythical fascination for young people across the United States. It was the land of sunshine and opportunity, where dreams of freedom, creativity, and reinvention were said to bloom as vibrantly as its golden poppies. In the years between 1967 and 1969, California—particularly Los Angeles and San Francisco—became a beacon for seekers of all kinds: artists, musicians, hippies, and anyone disillusioned with the conventional path laid out by their parents.

In this video, we examine what California represented to the young people who ended up at Spahn Ranch and how the Manson Family became emblematic of the darker side of the California dream. Through the stories of four individuals, including Linda Kasabian, who would later play a pivotal role in the Family’s downfall, we explore how the golden promise of the West Coast was tarnished by disillusionment, exploitation, and violence.
