Fraser’s third composition, Sonata No. 1 Gothic, is dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev—not as a stylistic homage to Prokofiev, but rather in its technical aspects. In Movement I, beginning at measure 72 with the directive più mosso e con abbandono, mirrors the formidable “colossale” passage in the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 16. Likewise, the third movement adopts a structure reminiscent of the concerto’s final movement, brimming with ferocious, syncopated leaps in both hands that test the extremes of pianistic command.

Written in ternary form, both Movements I and III are set in C minor, while the second movement shifts unexpectedly to E-flat minor—a choice that defies traditional harmonic conventions by eschewing the relative major or dominant key. The sonata is charged with visceral intensity and volcanic emotion, summoning a soundscape steeped in grandeur and shadow. Its tempestuous character brushes against the macabre, yet maintains a haunting beauty that captivates rather than repels.
