In this lesson we set up a professional, declarative development environment for our Infrastructure as Code course using mise.

Before writing any Terraform/OpenTofu or Terragrunt code, we focus on installing and managing all required tools in a reproducible way.

We’ll see why a declarative environment is critical for real-world teams:
Ensuring every developer has the same tools and versions
Reducing “works on my machine” issues
Improving security by controlling sources and checksums
Aligning local dev with CI/CD pipelines

Using mise, we define our environment in configuration files (mise.toml and mise.lock) and let mise handle installing and locking versions for tools like:
pre-commit – for code formatting and checks before commits
OpenTofu – our Infrastructure as Code tool of choice (Terraform-compatible)
Terragrunt – to manage and structure Terraform/OpenTofu configurations
kubectl – to interact with Kubernetes clusters

We’ll also walk through a mise demo showing how it switches environments per directory, and then build the exact setup used in the course so that students (and your team) can reproduce the same environment simply by running mise install.
