곤충강의 매미과는 매미아과(Cicadinae)와 좀매미아과(Tibicininae)로 구성된다. 매미과는 세계적으로 약 1,500종이 기록되어 있으며, 우리나라에 서식하는 매미는 15종이 확인되고 있다.
체색은 흑갈색 또는 갈색이며, 매미아목 중 가장 크다. 일반적으로 몸길이는 15∼80㎜ 정도이다. 머리가 크고 겹눈이 튀어나와 있으며 3개의 홑눈을 갖는다. 주둥이는 머리에서부터 가늘고 길쭉하게 배쪽으로 뻗어 있다.
날개는 2쌍이며 앞날개는 막질로 이루어져 있으며 대부분 투명하지만 짙은 색깔을 가진 종류도 있다. 배는 굵고 9∼11마디이다. 수컷의 기부 양쪽에는 잎사귀 모양의 발음기가 있다. 암컷의 배 끝에는 길다란 산란관이 있다.
매미는 불완전변태과정을 거쳐 늦봄에서 가을까지 성충시기를 보내다가 알 또는 애벌레 상태로 월동을 한다. 매미의 유충은 땅속에서 나무뿌리의 수액을 먹고 자라다가 지상으로 올라와 등껍질을 벗어내고 성충이 된다. 성충의 수명은 약 한 달 정도이다.
수컷의 성충은 배 아래쪽의 발음기를 이용해 여름철 내내 큰 소리로 운다. 수컷의 울음소리는 암컷과 짝짓기를 위한 구애의 소리이며 암컷은 나무 틈 속에 알을 낳는다. 식물의 즙액을 빨아먹는 섭식으로 식물에 피해를 주기도 한다. 성충은 숲 가장자리, 가로수, 공원 등에서 흔히 관찰된다. 대부분 여름철에 나타나지만 풀매미는 봄, 그리고 늦털매미는 가을에 나타난다.

They then emerge aboveground, shed their shells, and become adults. Their lifespan is approximately one month. Adult males use their vocal organs on the underside of their abdomens to produce loud cries throughout the summer. Their calls serve as courtship calls for females, who lay their eggs in tree crevices. They can also damage plants by sucking their sap. Adult cicadas are commonly found at forest edges, along street trees, and in parks. While most appear in the summer, grass cicadas appear in the spring, and late cicadas in the fall.
