Joseph Strutt collected some of the finest Renaissance paintings and opened his house to the public for the people of Derby to experience them (Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Titian, Canaletto etc.). He also invested in 'The Arboretum' which inspired Central Park, New York.

Derby's Art Gallery and Libraries were based around his collections of paintings and books.
