Voters and leading contenders cast ballots across the Netherlands on Wednesday in a knife‑edge snap election triggered when anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders brought down the four-party coalition in a row over tougher migration curbs.

In a country where coalitions are the norm, it’s unclear who would work with Wilders even if his Party for Freedom repeats its shock result from two years ago.

Most mainstream parties have already ruled him out, arguing his June move to torpedo the coalition over migration shows he is an unreliable partner.

Frans Timmermans, the former European Commission vice-president now leading the centre-left Labour–GreenLeft bloc, voted in his home city of Maastricht, accompanied by his black labrador.

The vote unfolds amid deep polarisation in this nation of 18 million, following violence at an anti-immigration rally in The Hague and protests against new asylum-seeker centres.
