Born in Kolhapur in 1901, Shantaram is known for his work in Marathi and Hindi cinema. He has made many films like 'Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani', 'Jhanak Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje', and 'Do Aankhen Barah Haath'.

Shantaram has also acted in some of his films himself. But as a director, he won a Filmfare, a Golden Globe, a National Award and even two awards at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Shantaram has been in the headlines for his films as well as his personal life. In fact, Shantaram had three marriages, that too without divorcing anyone. The interesting thing is that all his three wives lived in the same house.

When Shantaram was 20 years old, he married his first wife Vimalabai as per a relationship decided by both the families. Shantaram and Vimalabai have four children. When Shantaram entered the film industry in the late 20s, he met actress Jayshree.

The meeting of Shantaram and Jayshree gradually turned into love and despite being already married, he married Jayshree. He had three children from his second wife. At the age of 55, he married actress Sandhya for the third time. At that time Sandhya was only 18 years old.

In fact, when he did these marriages, there were no laws related to polygamy in India. In 1956, the news came that the Indian government was considering this matter. Just a few days before this law came into force, Shantaram got married for the third time, due to which he was criticized a lot.

However, the criticism did not affect Shantaram's family life much, but he got divorced from Jayshree in the same year. But Sandhya and Vimalabai lived in the same house for many years. Shantaram said goodbye to the world in 1990 at the age of 88.
