Natural lighting for YouTube videos. Learn how to light videos indoors! Its super easy and cheap. In video there are two main categories of light, hard and soft. If you want a natural look, you need to emulate the light provided by the sun. And Sunlight tends to spread everywhere quite evenly. It can be especially tricky around noon when Sunlight is the strongest, giving your footage harsh shadows or an overexposed look, whether your’e outdoors or just filming indoors with sunlight from the window. So how do you create a nice even sunlit look indoors?

The Fake Natural Light Checklist:
1 Strong light source
1 Large Diffuser
1 Fake Window Frame if you want the light to look like its coming from a window

You need 1 large light source that diffuses light across the entire frame, so the shadows in the shots are soft and barely visible. This emulates the sun on an overcast day where there's no longer a single point in the sky lighting your subject, but rather the light is spread across the entire sky. You can figure out if you have a hard or soft light source depending on the shadows. So make sure your shadows dont have very sharp edges.

You can use construction lights that cost less than $30. Set the light up where you would imagine your window to be. The light source itself may be a bit harsh but you’ll soften it and spread it using a large diffuser. White sheets or shower curtains are perfect for this. Place them front of your light source and move them around until the light on your subject is spread evenly across your entire camera frame AND while your subject moves.

Now If you really want to emphasize the look of light shining through a window, and you don’t have one. you can build yourself a fake window. Use a frame and shape it with diffusion material like a sheet in the centre. This will create a look something like this! Try it out in your next vlog!
