***TIMESTAMPS FOR EACH WARM UP BELOW***
So glad you are watching! This video is part of a series of marimba warm ups to get your students focused and ready for whatever lesson or song they are preparing. In this video, I will demonstrate three intermediate warm ups that is centered around thirds with a particular focus:
1. Two Hands Together (2:00): Play with two mallets, starting on C and E, and go up the scale in a series of parallel thirds to a popular syncopated rhythm. As you move up the scale, there are 2 beats of rest to allow students to adjust before they play the next set of notes. Descending the scale, students play each set of notes one time with rest in between.
At 3:05, the warm up repeats without the rests.
2. Alternating Thirds (3:27)): This warm up will incorporate the left (L) and right (R) hands, but with twist. The rhythm is ta ti-ti ta, ta ti-ti ta, etc. again moving in a series of thirds. The sticking pattern for the hands is L, L-R, L all the way up the scale. Coming back down the scale, the sticking pattern switches to R, R-L, R (3:56).
3. Together-Then-Not Warm Up (4:09): This is the most challenging. You might want to have students practice just the sticking at first. Play L and R together (LR), then R-L-R, LR, R-L-R, LR on parallel thirds ascending the scale. Switch to LR, L-R-L.... on the descent of the scale (4:53).

Use these one of these as a challenging warm up for your beginner group or use all three for your intermediate group, the focus is accuracy. Playing them at a slow to medium speed is very beneficial. You can increase the speed once the group (the GROUP) can play this with pretty good accuracy.
