In this showcase snippet video, we take a deep dive into a very bespoke, high-end photography zine. Let us start off with the binding. We printed the sheets, folded them in half and literally sewed them together using red thread. This process is called singer sewing. Visually it actually looks super cool too and the red makes a nice contrast against the printed grey cover.

The zine is A5 and inside we find 52 pages onto 120gsm Uncoated. SO 52 pages are very much at the high end of pagination for a folded and bound zine but because the pages are sewn in, they are more robust than if they were just stapled. There is a fluid layout style to display 1,2 or three of the photographer's images per page.

The final little treat in this zine is the first and last page, almost acting as endpapers, onto the super cool 81gsm Tamashiki Shiro paper from the mill GF Smith. The paper has a recurring pattern across the sheet and is semi-transparent so it hints at the content on the leaf behind.

The singer sewing and GF Smith paper do look superb but are for larger budget zines. Expect each to jump your quote up by a few hundred pounds so unfortunately, they’re not going to work for a student project or FMP where you’re looking to keep costs to a minimum.
