NATO agreed to double the number of battle groups protecting its eastern border and is working with the U.S. to prepare for Russia potentially using chemical or nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

The heightened readiness underscored the intense pressure on U.S. President Joe Biden and other leaders who gathered in Brussels on Thursday for meetings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Union and the Group of Seven leading economies.
