Chicago again hired producer David Foster to create a follow up to Chicago 17.

Chicago 18 is the fifteenth studio album by the American rock group Chicago, which was released on September 29, 1986. This album marks the first release without original vocalist Peter Cetera and is also the first to include Jason Scheff on bass and vocals.

After Peter Cetera departed for a solo career in 1985, Chicago brought in Jason Scheff to take over his role as both vocalist and bassist. With Scheff and Bill Champlin, who had joined the band in 1981, the primary vocal contributions to Chicago came from its two newest members.

DaWayne Bailey joined Chicago in July 1986. At that time, his former bandmate Jason Scheff contacted him to audition for the lead guitarist role in the band. Bailey played and recorded with Chicago from July 1986 until January 1995, and he was involved in their previously unreleased album, which was intended to be titled Stone of Sisyphus in 1994.
