The P-38 Lightning is one of the great American aircraft of World War two. Built by Lockheed Aircraft company the aircraft answered the call for a high altitude interceptor with a good rate of climb. The P-38 was designed around a pair of In-line Allison engines, turbo supercharged for better performance at higher altitudes. This is where the aircraft gets its iconic “twin Boom” layout. The Lighting was used in various rolls such as escort duties, Ground attack and reconnaissance (witch it was great at) plus many more roles. The P-38 proved to handle very well in the pacific theater downing more Japanese aircraft than any other type of army air force aircraft. It was Even credited for intercepting and destroying Admiral Yamamoto's aircraft on April 18, 1943.
Escort duties over Europe proved to be difficult as well. The high altitudes that B-17 Flying Fortresses were operating at caused cockpit and power-plant heating difficulties making flying at these high altitudes impractical. This crisis would be remedied only with the introduction of the P-51 Mustang. Despite these Shortcomings It was a powerful ground attack platform with 1 20mm , 4 .50 cal machine guns plus the ability to carry 4,000 lbs of bombs. The lightning would still have a place over the skies of Europe.
The P-38 was one versatile aircraft serving in almost every theater of the Second World war. It was fast and deadly packing a powerful punch in the nose. Earning the name Fork Tailed Devil.
