Traditional parenting is deeply invested in rewarding desirable behavior and punishing undesirable behavior. What are the alternatives? Is it possible or advantageous to parent a child without resorting to reward and punishment?

Alfie Kohn, Elaine Mazlish, and Adele Faber say "yes", that in fact building a parent-child relationship on reason, compassion, and connection rather than behavior manipulation is key to helping your child develop a sense of self, responsibility, and empathy that is not dependent on the parent as enforcer. In this talk I draw from the books Unconditional Parenting and _How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk_, and my recent experience working to apply Kohn, Mazlish, and Faber's techniques and principles.
